Rick Gage

As far as school is concerned I want to start with San Antonio. I had 6 great years there with my highlights being 2nd to Buzzy Burt for the run at King of the Carnival. Sue Low came in 2nd to Janice Holmes. Sue and I were neighbor friends but Janice and Buzzy were cousins! Who can compete with that? I couldn't have lost to a greater guy. He was magic. I was also in Mr. Stern's 6th grade class and I was the "head projectionist." Yes, I was so "mature" at the time, that I even hung out those little projection holes to amuse my classmates. Gary Hackney was my very responsible assistant. Hope to see you at the reunion Gary!

I have all my class pictures from San Antonio if anyone is interested, including the crowning of the King at the Carnival from 6th grade, shown above. Boy we were young!

Vina Danks was my next stop followed by Chaffey High School of course. I proceeded to Chaffey College and then San Diego State. Majoring in Business, I ended up working for Transamerica Financial for 12 years ending with the position of Regional Sales Manager for the Western States. From there I worked for 14 years for Associates Financial and Savings and Loan as an Assistant Vice President. Times were changing and I ventured out on my own as a Mortgage and Real Estate Broker which meant for the first time I got to work close to home.

I was one of the founders of the Ontario historical society, Ontario Heritage, and served as President for 10 years. We put on many a fundraising Gala at Guasti Mansion and, to promote Ontario's fine collection of historic homes, we put on 6 historical home tours. As a result we, along with the City of Ontario, helped promote and designate 7 historical neighborhoods including the National Historic Designation of Euclid Avenue.

I also participated in the citizens committee Lead by Superintendent Bette Harrison to renovate Chaffey, which included a total renovation of the Boys Gym with a brand new basketball floor. Our own 67 graduate (the late) Councilman Jerry DuBois appointed me an Ontario Planning Commissioner and I still hold that position after 16 years. I have enjoyed learning the history of Ontario. As part of the historical society I participated in the Ontario Heritage Belleview Cemetery event and got to play George Chaffey himself at his gravesite and told the story of the origin of Ontario through the eyes of our founding father.

I met my wife Lynn at San Diego State and we have been married 43 years. I saw this cute blond haired girl with a shag haircut sitting on the San Diego State quads grass. She was stressed having just lost a contact in the grass. I promptly told her I could find it, and I found it! The rest is history. She was from Michigan and I brought her to my home town where we have lived ever since. Lynn taught in the Ontario Montclair School District for many years teaching kindergarten and then became the Principal at Kingsley Elementary School in Montclair. We are both retired now and spend a lot of time with our grandkids and traveling the world. We have taken many a road trip in the USA and have traveled to China and have been to Europe extensively, Paris being our favorite city. I was also a tour guide in Rome once! I love historic Europe. We also love renovating our historic home.

Our home is not far from Chaffey High School. In fact it is right across the street. The French cottage looking house I eyed as a Chaffey student. The one with the round oak door and ocean wave wood shingled roof. We have lived there now for 42 years. (We had to buy the home a short year after we were married because rent was going up on the new Lemon Tree apartments in Upland from $170 a month to $180! We panicked!)

We have 2 children Lizzy and Ricky Jr., both of whom graduated from Chaffey. Lizzy is a 3rd grade teacher and Ricky is in the restaurant business each living in San Diego. We have two beautiful grandchildren, from our daughter Lizzy and son in law Sean - a girl and a boy - Ella 4 and Cameron 2. San Diego, where Lynn and I met, is our second home and we have so much fun spending a lot of time with our grandkids in San Diego, in La Jolla, Balboa Park, the Zoo, Sea World, Old Town and the beaches. Could life bring anything more wonderful than grandkids? I don't think so.
